RADICAL SIMPLICITY
Our lives are busier and more chaotic than ever. We simply don't have enough time in the day to do all that we "need" to do and yet we commit to more events, people, places, projects and causes. Our bills are piling up.We don't know how to get out from under our debt so we continue to work at a job that we don't care about anymore. Our minds run away with our thoughts about how to pay for college, vacation, and the mortgage. When do we find the time to bake cookies for church, take the kids to practice, and that project at work that takes us away from being at home with our family? It all leaves you breathless doesn't it?
What we need is less in our lives, not more. With simplicity comes peace. This doesn't mean that you have to live in poverty or without a vacation. Radical Simplicity is taking away the clutter in your life and focusing on the things that truly matter. It's leading an authentic life according to your own rules not someone else's.
SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE: HOW TO GET BACK TO THE BASICS AND START LIVING AGAIN
AREAS TO SIMPLIFY YOUR LIFE:
CONSUMERISM
What we buy has possibly the biggest impact on how we can simplify our lives. We are bombarded by ads on TV, Radio and in print media. Everywhere you look someone wants you to buy something because it’s the newest, fastest, best, most beautiful product that NO ONE can live without.
1) Turn off the TV: what you don’t know about can’t
hurt you. If you can’t do that then limit your time
and be mindful. Mute the commercials.
2) Read the newspaper online or stop reading it all
together.
3) Change your tune. Listen to public radio. There are
virtually no commercials. Listen to an Mp3 player.
4) Read magazine’s online version or just search
the internet for subject matter.
5) Determine what your basic needs are: water,
whole foods, shelter, and clothing.
6) Trim the fluff: Do you need a cell phone and a
land line? Do you really need a gourmet meal
every time you sit down? Do you buy designer
clothes and stress about having money to pay the
rent??? You don't have to live in poverty to live
simply. Buy an item that has the quality to last and
is good to the earth. Don't buy anything just for the
designer name or because it's on sale. Be smart.
7) Take time to transition: move from latte, to coffee
made at home, and then to more water, less
coffee. It took time to make a habit. It will
take time to change it. Don’t focus on what you
are leaving behind but what you are gaining by
changing. Ex: more water to nourish my body.
